Elevation profile
Climbs from 1,800 m to 2,697 m over 10 km. Elevations are smoothed DEM samples — hover or drag the profile for a reading.
Why choose this route
Solitude and summits. You start at 1,800 m, walk the sky-rim above Kazania and can tag Agios Antonios, Skolio, Skala — even Mytikas — on the way to the plateau, most likely without meeting anybody until Skala.
The route, stage by stage
Stage lengths are measured along the mapped track. The split times share the published 6–7.5 h out between the stages by distance and climb — scree, scrambling and route-finding take longer than that arithmetic suggests, so read the splits as a rhythm rather than a schedule, and add your own stops.
Climbs 650 m over 2.2 km to Migotsidis emergency bivouac (2,450 m) — 2.2 km from the trailhead, about 2 h 15 min of walking.
At the top of the ski lifts, reached by the ski-centre service track and its pylon line. No water. Sources put it anywhere from 2,345 to 2,460 m.
Drops 40 m to Christakis bivouac (Laka Christaki) (2,413 m) — about 2 km off the mapped line, 4 km from the trailhead, about 35 min of walking.
Only on the longer V1 variant, which detours here over a ~2,570 m saddle with stakes and a short fixed rope on the descent. Unguarded, always open, 10 + 6 bunks, and no water source.
Climbs 400 m to Agios Antonios peak (2,816 m) — about 1.4 km off the mapped line, 4.3 km from the trailhead, about 1 h 5 min of walking.
Optional summit with an emergency hut on top, a short way off the direct line.
Climbs 90 m over 1.5 km to Skolio peak (2,905 m) — 5.8 km from the trailhead, about 40 min of walking.
Second highest point in Greece, on the rim above the 500 m Kazania precipice. Given as 2,905 m by OSM survey and 2,911 m elsewhere.
Contours 0.5 km, near enough level, to Skala peak (2,882 m) — 6.3 km from the trailhead, about 10 min of walking.
Start of the Kakia Skala scramble and the last bail-out before it. Height given as 2,866 m by Greek guides and 2,882 m by OSM.
Drops 400 m over 1.1 km to Zonaria fork (2,480 m) — 7.4 km from the trailhead, about 45 min of walking.
Where the E4 to Skala parts company with the Zonaria traverse to the plateau. A west-side source places this junction at 40.08139, 22.36142; the OSM way junction used here is the eastern reading.
Climbs 220 m over 1.4 km to Louki couloir base (2,700 m) — 8.8 km from the trailhead, about 1 h of walking.
The Zonaria path passes directly under the Mytikas couloir here. Stone-fall from parties above is the mountain's main hazard; a helmet is worth wearing even if you are only walking through.
Contours 1.2 km, near enough level, to Giosos Apostolidis refuge (2,697 m) — 10 km from the trailhead, about 20 min of walking.
The goal — highest staffed refuge in the Balkans, run by SEO Thessaloniki, open June–October with 66–80 beds and a glass emergency room that is always unlocked. Tap water is melted snow and not potable; bottled water is sold. OSM tags 2,690 m against the refuge's own 2,697 m.
Getting back to your car
- Out-and-back, but note that the return re-climbs from the plateau to the ~2,700 m rim, adding about an hour compared with a normal descent.
- A through-hike to Prionia or Gortsia needs a pickup: it is roughly 2.5 h by road around the massif.
Things to know
- There is an ID check at the camp gate, and passage can be refused during exercises — call ahead on +30 24930 62163.
- Do not photograph military installations.
- There is no mobile coverage on parts of the route.
- A 22 km 4x4 dirt road from Kalyvia on the Elassona side reaches Christakis directly in about 50 minutes, for an even higher start.
- The totals here are composites of verified segments: no single published source measures the full Vrysopoules–Apostolidis line. Direct is 9.5–10.5 km with 1,350–1,550 m of ascent; the V1 detour via Christakis is 12–13 km.
- Christakis and Agios Antonios are listed as waypoints but both sit off the direct line — the V1 variant and an optional summit respectively.
Conditions
- Water
- Last water at Vrysopoules and then nothing at all on the route — neither Christakis nor Migotsidis has a source. Carry 2.5–3 L.
- Exposure
- Entirely open alpine terrain above 2,400 m with no storm shelter except the bivouacs. The Zonaria traverse at the end is as on the Prionia route, so a helmet is advisable there.
- Season
- June to October. The KEOAX road stays open all year, which makes this the classic winter and ski-mountaineering approach — a full alpine undertaking in that season.
- Crowding
- The quietest way to the plateau. Often nobody at all until Skala.
