Why choose this route

True solitude on a marked E4 line: the atmospheric Stalagmatia ravine, forest giving way to alpine meadow, and a night in a mountain bivouac. This is Olympus as it was fifty years ago, and you will most likely have all of it to yourself below Skala.

The route, stage by stage

Stage lengths are measured along the mapped track. The split times share the published 9–11 h out between the stages by distance and climb — scree, scrambling and route-finding take longer than that arithmetic suggests, so read the splits as a rhythm rather than a schedule, and add your own stops.

  1. Climbs 1,330 m over 6.9 km to Flampouro shoulder (2,480 m) — 6.9 km from the trailhead, about 4 h 45 min of walking.

These are the coordinates of the 2,480 m summit. The E4 crosses the shoulder roughly 1.1 km further south, so the mapped track passes below the peak rather than over it.

  2. Drops 130 m over 2.5 km to Mikri Gourna (2,350 m) — 9.4 km from the trailhead, about 45 min of walking.

High basin on the way to Laka Christaki.

  3. Climbs 60 m over 2.8 km to Christakis bivouac (Laka Christaki) (2,413 m) — 12.2 km from the trailhead, about 55 min of walking.

Unguarded emergency bivouac, always open, 10 + 6 bunks, first come first served. No water source at all — snowmelt only. Tourist sites quoting 2,500–2,550 m are wrong.

  4. Climbs 470 m over 2.7 km to Skala peak (2,882 m) — 14.9 km from the trailhead, about 1 h 45 min of walking.

Start of the Kakia Skala scramble and the last bail-out before it. Height given as 2,866 m by Greek guides and 2,882 m by OSM.

  5. Drops 400 m over 1.1 km to Zonaria fork (2,480 m) — 16 km from the trailhead, about 40 min of walking.

Where the E4 to Skala parts company with the Zonaria traverse to the plateau. A west-side source places this junction at 40.08139, 22.36142; the OSM way junction used here is the eastern reading.

  6. Climbs 220 m over 2.6 km to Giosos Apostolidis refuge (2,697 m) — 18.7 km from the trailhead, about 1 h 10 min of walking.

The goal — highest staffed refuge in the Balkans, run by SEO Thessaloniki, open June–October with 66–80 beds and a glass emergency room that is always unlocked. Tap water is melted snow and not potable; bottled water is sold. OSM tags 2,690 m against the refuge's own 2,697 m.

Getting back to your car

  • Out-and-back over two days, which is the natural choice.
  • Through-hike east to Prionia or Gortsia with a pre-arranged pickup — the drive back around the massif is long.

Things to know

  • Christakis is first-come and unguarded, with 10 + 6 bunks — carry a sleeping bag, stove, food and all your water.
  • The Salatoura path out of Kokkinopilos leads to Kitros peak, not the plateau, and is unmarked beyond the hut. Do not confuse the two.
  • Two lower waypoints from the research — the upper Stalagmatia ravine at about 1,800 m and the Loutsa Papamihou meadow at about 2,000 m, where the alpine zone starts — have no published coordinates, so they are described here rather than mapped.
  • The totals above Christakis are composite estimates: about 16 km and 2,000–2,100 m of ascent overall, of which the well-documented lower half is 9 km and about +1,280 m to Christakis.
  • Realistically a two-day trip. A single push is 9–11 h with no margin for afternoon storms.

Conditions

Water
None. The old spring in the Stalagmatia riverbed has dried up in recent years, and Christakis has nothing but snowmelt. Fill up in the village.
Exposure
Forest, then open alpine ground with no shelter. Nothing technical unless you add the Louki couloir at the end.
Season
June to October, with a recommended window of roughly 15 April to 15 November for the lower half.
Crowding
Near-zero below Skala.
