Why choose this route
The shortest, wildest and most direct line from Prionia to the Plateau of the Muses: an old timber-hauling ridge through three alpine meadows, empty of people, finished by a dramatic secured wall of steel cable and metal steps that puts you on the plateau rim a few hundred metres from Kakalos. Nothing else on Olympus gets you from the road to 2,650 m in six kilometres.
The route, stage by stage
Stage lengths are measured along the mapped track. The split times share the published 4.5–6 h out between the stages by distance and climb — scree, scrambling and route-finding take longer than that arithmetic suggests, so read the splits as a rhythm rather than a schedule, and add your own stops.
Climbs 670 m over 2.3 km to Gomarostalos ridge junction (1,765 m) — 2.3 km from the trailhead, about 2 h 10 min of walking.
Where the traverse out of the Prionia forest gains the ridge proper, by the meadows the route is named after — γομαροστάλια, where the loggers' pack animals rested.
Climbs 340 m over 1.1 km to Upper ridge meadows (2,100 m) — 3.5 km from the trailhead, about 1 h 5 min of walking.
The last easy ground. Above here the ridge steepens and the escape variants run out.
Climbs 350 m over 0.9 km to Start of the fixed cables (2,450 m) — 4.4 km from the trailhead, about 1 h of walking.
The secured 150 m wall begins here: steel cable on posts, metal steps and fixed ropes up the rock face below the plateau rim. Harness on, helmet on, and no way back down it in a hurry.
Climbs 180 m in almost no horizontal distance to Kalagia top (2,625 m) — 4.4 km from the trailhead.
Top of the secured section, on the north-east corner of the Plateau of the Muses.
Contours 0.3 km, near enough level, to Plateau exit (2,600 m) — 4.7 km from the trailhead, about 5 min of walking.
Where the ridge path levels onto the plateau and joins the walking paths between Kakalos and Apostolidis.
Climbs 50 m over 0.4 km to Christos Kakalos refuge (2,648 m) — 5.1 km from the trailhead, about 15 min of walking.
The plateau's second refuge, about 17 beds, 15–20 minutes across the Plateau of the Muses from Apostolidis.
Climbs 50 m over 0.5 km to Giosos Apostolidis refuge (2,697 m) — 5.6 km from the trailhead, about 15 min of walking.
The goal — highest staffed refuge in the Balkans, run by SEO Thessaloniki, open June–October with 66–80 beds and a glass emergency room that is always unlocked. Tap water is melted snow and not potable; bottled water is sold. OSM tags 2,690 m against the refuge's own 2,697 m.
Getting back to your car
- Descend the walking line: Zonaria to Refuge A, then the mule track to Prionia — 3.5–4.5 h back to the same car park, and the only sensible way home. Never go back down the cables tired, or on wet rock.
- Or descend to Gortsia over Laimos and Petrostrouga and cover the 4–4.5 km road link back up to Prionia by hitching or taxi.
Things to know
- This is not a hiking shortcut to the plateau. The final wall is graded via ferrata B with UIAA I–II moves and serious exposure: bring a via-ferrata set and a helmet, and go with somebody who has done this kind of ground before — or with a guide.
- The rock is friable in places and the line is lightly travelled, so a helmet matters as much for what comes down at you as for what you might fall onto.
- The wall was equipped in May 2007 by Thessaloniki mountaineers and the cable has since been re-routed onto a steeper slab with metal steps, so the gear has been renewed at least once. Greek technical sources call it well anchored in sound rock; user ratings are middling and one calls it poor. Inspect what you are about to weight.
- Blue paint marks lead the whole way and are dense in the forest, but the wall follows the cable rather than the marks — and the route is not drawn on most standard hiking maps.
- Never descend the wall in the wet, and do not plan on reversing it at the end of a long day. Come down Zonaria instead.
- There is no water at all after Prionia.
- Sources disagree on the name and on the numbers. Γομαρόσταλος (also Γουμαροστάλι) is the mountain feature and Κόψη Γομαρόσταλου the technical line; the variant "Σκάλα Γομάρου" appears in no source at all. HellasPath measures 5.7 km and +1,623 m, topoguide 6.5 km and +1,600 m, both at about 4:30 h up; this page keeps the midpoint.
- No accident reports specific to this route turned up in Greek or English. Given how few people walk it, read that as thin evidence rather than as reassurance.
Conditions
- Water
- None after Prionia. Fill up at the springs by the taverna and carry it all — there is no source anywhere on the ridge, and the next drink is the bottled water sold at Kakalos or Apostolidis.
- Exposure
- Serious. The upper ridge is steep and narrowing, and the last 100 m of climbing — 150 m of vertical development — is a secured rock face above a long drop, on rock that is friable in places. topoguide compares the upper wall with the Louki couloir of Mytikas and calls the whole line the most technically demanding mountaineering route on Olympus.
- Season
- June to October, snow-free, only. In winter it is a full alpine climb: the wall is bypassed by a gully to the right of the summer line, and the ridge holds snow long after the walking routes have cleared.
- Crowding
- The emptiest line on the mountain's busy side. Most days you will meet nobody at all between the Prionia car park and the plateau rim.
